WOODSTOCK -- Winter Feast a culinary event hosted by the Rodd Mill River Resort on January 10 and Winter Blast, an outdoor family concert and fireworks show January 18 were announced Friday as the signature events for the second annual Up West Winterfest taking place in West Prince January 10 to 19.
Up West Winterfest steering committee members, front row from left, Terry Stone, Karen Doyle, Courtney McCue; back row, Tylan Robinson, Rebecca Ford, Mitchell Rennie, Susan Wallace-Flynn, Louise Arsenault and Blair Duggan helped roll out the schedule Friday for the festival which will kick off PEI 2014 community events in P.E.I. January 10 to 19.
The family concert, on the grounds of Mill River Provincial Park, will be followed by a 19 plus after party in the Rodd Mill River Resort. It will feature Dylan Menzie and local guest performers.
Up West Winter Fest grew from a four-day community event last year to a 10-day event this year meant to entertain locals and visitors alike, which kicks off the PEI 2014 community events calendar. The municipalities of O’Leary, Alberton and Tignish as well as the Rodd Mill River Resort and Mill River Provincial Park will be the staging grounds for most of the festival events.
“We’re hoping to set the bar pretty high and vise visitors an expectation of what they can experience in coming to the Island in 2014,” said Mitchell Rennie, manager of North Cape Coastal Tourism Area Partnership declared.
With a $25,000 contribution from the P.E.I. 2014 Fund in addition to $1,500 each from the communities of Alberton, Tignish and O’Leary, Rennie said a focus was placed on increasing the tourism potential of the festival, engaging the communities and fostering partnerships in non-traditional groups and the communities.
Other events taking place during the 10-day Winterfest are Amazing Rally activities in the three sponsoring municipalities, a 2 and 5K Resolution Run, Big Break Snow Golf, Trivia qualifiers and final, firemen’s outdoor hockey tournament, ice fishing tournament, curling bonspiel, Snow Pitch softball tournament and numerous community-based activities.
