SUMMERSIDE — The City of Summerside is looking for more input from the public on the upcoming 2014 budget.

Bruce MacDougall

Last week, the City of Summerside held public consultation sessions with citizens and members of the business community to gather input for the budget.

“We want to be transparent and inform all citizens about the city’s finances. We are accountable to residents for how their tax dollars are spent,” said finance committee chairman and Deputy Mayor Bruce MacDougall. “The truth is that the cost of providing programs and services to residents is increasing but revenues are not increasing at the same rate. Council often has to make some very hard choices on behalf of residents when setting priorities and divvying up resources.

“Since we make decisions on your behalf, we want to give you every opportunity to have your say.”

Those who were unable to attend the in-person consultations can provide their input by email to Rob Philpot, director of finance, at

Residents are asked to send their answers as soon as possible to the following questions:

— What city programs and services are most important/least important to you? What do you view as needs? Wants?

— How should the city deal with increasing costs of delivering its programs and services? Are you willing to pay more taxes to help support these programs?

— The city’s total debt is currently $68 million. Should the city take on more debt if it meant addressing significant infrastructure needs?

— How could the city be more efficient and effective with your money? What areas could be trimmed? How could we give you more value for your tax dollars?

For reference, an overview of the City of Summerside’s budget can be found at This document contains background information that may be helpful when formulating input.

Cannot WAIT till the next election as this is just part of the pr campaign that his royal roundness is putting forth! 3/4 of the people at the meeting were city staff and councillors. Take a hint....nobody trusts city staff ....

A good place to start would be the elimination of at least one council seat, especially when our population i is declining. Compare to Charlottetown with only 2 more council seats but representing 3 times the population.

well for one thing is allow more mobile vendors in the city, and not have just one person controlling the food at the rink or the city.

well after all the years i have been in the city even being born there. i have never known the city to listen to the tax payers. so really you guys have already made up your minds but this is a great way to make the tax payers feel good. if you had of listened or ask the tax payers when you donated the millions to the concert that was never going to happen you would have saved that money. and o think you have 2 ex police officers on council and they did not see the warning signs. LOL. one thing is to cut out so much red tape for a business you would have more but i guess the money comes 1st but you are not getting the money as the places are not coming. unless they have money but the little guy takes years to get thru your RED tape.

Deputy Mayor MacDougaall, you have been Finance Chairperson for yrs and Deputy Mayor to long to start off. You were running the money flow all through the Griffin matter, Concert Fiasco, Hopping Report, paying lawyers millions and now that your ship is sinking you want the Citizens to join in with you and the gang of five to try and justify duties. Quit while is its still time and take the Mayor, Holman, Steele and Dowling with you. You five are the laughing stock of North America. You should brief your new Financial Director and CAO as to how you guys have been opearating over the last 15 yrs.
