The prison in Springhill is in its second lockdown in a month following the violent assault of an inmate on Monday night.
Prison spokeswoman Shannon Oickle confirmed the alleged incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Monday with the injured inmate being evaluated by staff and subsequently transported to an outside hospital for treatment.
There is no update on the inmate’s condition and Oickle would not confirm how the inmate was assaulted, although it’s believed he was stabbed several times.
Oickle could not confirm if his attacker has been identified.
Neither staff nor other inmates were injured during the incident.
Springhill Police are conducting an investigation, requiring the prison to be placed in a lockdown with inmates being fed in their cells. As well, regularly scheduled visits have been cancelled. Visitors who have already planned a visit are asked to contact the institution directly.
The prison was locked down for several days in late September after officials there received information of a security threat that became a health and safety issue.
