SUMMERSIDE – Summerside Mayor Basil Stewart has joined with other communities across Canada declaring Oct. 11 as International Day of the Girl Child.
This day promotes equal treatment and opportunities for girls around the world in areas such as law, nutrition, health care, education, training, and freedom from violence and abuse.
“Fostering confident, capable girls is vital to advancing the engagement and involvement of women,” said Councillor Tina Mundy. “Success begins in childhood, girls who are supported and encouraged by their communities today become the strong community leaders of tomorrow.”
Stewart said equal opportunity for girls is good for everyone.

Municipalities across Canada are participating in marking this second annual international day. Local governments are proclaiming this day to highlight and appreciate the contributions of girls.
