SKINNERS POND -- Prince Edward Island’s fall lobster fishery in Lobster Fishing Area 25 is heading into its final two days. Fishermen have until Thursday evening to land their final catches.
Some gear trickled in on Saturday and Monday. Wind kept many boats in port on Tuesday.
Prince County Fishermen’s Association president Lee Knox, who fishes out of Skinners Pond, said about eight boats from his port have aready finished landing, but most will keep fishing right up until the last day. He said catches in that part of the district had fallen off extensively in the past two weeks and are behind last year’s numbers overall
Prices that hovered around $2.50 and $2.75 a pound for the first half of the season, crept up a quarter around September 9. Knox said fishermen remain hopeful buyers will decide to make price increases retroactive to the first of the season, pointing out quality is said to be at its best early in the season.
