ALBERTON -- The CEO of Health PEI anticipates it could be the last week of October before the Collaborative Emergency Model for Western Hospital is launched.
Still to take place, Dr. Richard Wedge said, is some combined training for the Registered Nurses and Advanced Care paramedics who will be staffing the CEC during the overnight hours.
One nurse and one paramedic will be in attendance for each overnight shift. Emergency room physicians will be available by phone during those hours. Wedge said the emergency room doctors still have to be identified and some payment details still have to be worked out. The doctors answering the calls, he said, will be off-duty emergency room physicians but scheduled on-call for the CEC. He said three or four doctors have expressed interest in the on-call arrangements and others are giving it some consideration.
He noted seven Nova Scotia physicians are involved in the overnight on-call rotation for all of the CECs in that province. He said Health PEI is hoping to have Island physicians fill the role for the Western Hospital CEC.
