CHARLOTTETOWN – Farmers Helping Farmers recently announced its award winners for 2013.
The list is wide ranging, covering individuals and organizations who are both new and long-time supporters of the P.E.I. based charity.
Sandra MacKinnon, awards committee chairwoman said in a press release the organization is lucky to have such a committed group of volunteers at its disposal.
This year’s winners include Ellen Moore, 7, of Murray River, who won this year’s Farmers Helping Farmers Youth Award. She was recognized for the projects she has led during the past two years to increase awareness about Kenyan youth. She raised more than $3,000 for the Mutwewathi Primary School and other projects.
The Friends of Farmers Helping Farmers was presented to the Rotary Club of Stratford.
Over the past five years, the Rotary Club has provided financial support to women and their families in the Wakulima Mukurwe-ini region in Kenya for the purchase of biogas digesters. The digesters provide up to five hours of methane daily, cutting down on smoky wood fires and decreasing the amount of time spent cooking.
This year’s Honourary Life Membership was presented to Dr. Winston Johnston of Charlottetown.
This award recognizes members who have made an outstanding and substantial contribution to the organization.
Johnston has been a strong supporter of Farmers Helping Farmers for over a decade. He has given countless hours of service and dedication to the organization’s committees, projects and activities.
