‘Fresh Meat’ sessions start later this month
SUMMERSIDE — Roller derby action will be on display Thursday night during an open house at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside.
Red Rock N Roller Derby is hosting the event, which starts at 7 p.m., as a way of attracting new participants — and fans — to the sport.
“It is basically for anyone who has any interest in roller derby whatsoever to come on out, talk to the girls, try on some gear if they want to, ask questions about the Fresh Meat Learn to Skate program or volunteering or referring opportunities as well,” said roller derby member Jana Selby-Rogers.
The hope is the open house will encourage people to sign up for the derby’s Fresh Meat program, which starts on Sept. 19.
“That will run on Thursday nights and that is a 12-week program,” said Selby-Rogers. “We’ll start off at the Silver Fox.”
The permanent location of that program has yet to be determined. Last year, it was held at Ecole Sur Mer.
“We’re still in search of space. We always have a challenge finding any space in the winter, especially with a concrete floor,” said Selby-Rogers. “We’re still looking around to see what is available for space.”
Red Rock N Roller Derby will be in action on Sept. 14 in Pownall Sports Centre for their second doubleheader event in the past month.
Doors open at 5 p.m. and the event begins at 5:30, with the first bout between Moonshine Maidens, Red Rock N Roller Derby’s Charlottetown-based team, and the Reigns of Terror from Moncton, N.B. The second bout will feature the Twisted Sisters of Summerside and the Moncton-based Daughters of Anarchy.
Admission is $6 at the door with a $1 reduced off that price for those who bring with them a non-perishable food item. Those under 12 get in free.
