SUMMERSIDE — An initiative aimed at providing backpacks for children in need has surpassed its goal.
Operation Backpack, in its first year, has collected enough items to fill 223 backpacks. And, said organizer Deb Howatt-Gallant, items are still coming in.
The goal was to collect enough items, by Aug. 31, for 200 backpacks.
“That was just a goal. We said let’s see if we could meet it. It was kind of outrageous and out there,” said Howatt-Gallant. “It was very exciting.”
The backpacks are now being distributed to families throughout Summerside and beyond.
“We gave out 162, so we are waiting for some calls back. I would say they will be all gone. If there are 15 left over we’ll call a couple of schools just in case there are shortages.”
Howatt-Gallant said Operation Backpack would continue next year.
