The YMCA Early Years running club takes off from the starting line at Queen Elizabeth Park. Despite a chilly morning, the 22 kids in the club were excited to do their laps.
SUMMERSIDE – The early morning cold and a little rain couldn’t deter the YMCA running club members from completing their laps on Thursday morning.
Twenty-two pre-school children lined up at the starting line at the Queen Elizabeth Park, eager to take off.
“Hey, she cheated!” One boy yelled out, after a young girl took an early step.
On “go,” the kids took off – most running, some walking.
As they finished their lap, each child ran over to Jeff Harper, an assistant with the program, to get a sticker put by their name.
“I like the stickers,” said Cohen Woods, a young runner. “I have them on top of my name now, because my chart is all filled out.”
When the program began five weeks ago, the children started out running one or two laps. They quickly set a goal, however, to do six laps around the softball field by the end of the summer.
Most kids caught on quickly, said YMCA intern Roxann Poirier, who runs the program.
“To our surprise, at week four most of the children in the club were completing six laps with ease,” she said.
