STANLEY BRIDGE – A 47-year-old man who drowned near Stanley Bridge late Sunday afternoon has been identified as Trent Jeremiah Simpson of Ebenezer.
Simpson slipped while digging for clams with his family, RCMP confirmed Monday.
RCMP Const. Ben Sark said Simpson was in the Sandspit area off Cavendish Beach, accessible only by boat from Stanley Bridge, when he went in over his head and drowned.
“The water depth can be very deceiving,” Sark said. “It can be two feet deep mostly, but then you take a step ahead and you’re in over your head.”
Water conditions were not a factor, as he was in a sheltered part of the harbour with no riptides or strong currents.
“The victim was not a swimmer,” Sark said.
Family members and bystanders pulled Simpson from the water, but attempts to resuscitate were unsuccessful.
Queens District RCMP, Island EMS and New London Fire Department all responded to the drowning call.
The incident is not being investigated as suspicious. An autopsy was due to be performed on Monday.
