SUMMERSIDE – Senate officials have referred Senator Mike Duffy’s residency declarations and related expenses to external auditors at Deloitte for review and report.
In a release from Ottawa Friday, Senator David Tkachuk, Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration, said senators Patrick Brazeau and Mac Harb, will also be referred to the appropriate subcommittees of the Internal Economy Committee.
As well, the Chair and Deputy Chair of the committee are seeking legal advice on the question of Duffy’s residency.
From the Consolidated Statutes of Canada, one of the qualifications of Senator is, “he shall be resident in the province for which he is appointed.”
In a statement also issued today, Duffy said he is a born and bred Islander.
“I am proud to represent my province and its interest in the Senate of Canada,” said Duffy.
He added he represents the taxpayers with care.
“Canadians know I would never do anything to betray the public trust. I have a home in Prince Edward Island as required by law. I will have no further comment until this review is complete.”
