Embattled Progressive Conservative leader now says she'll step aside as Opposition leader

Olive Crane says she is tired of fighting the knives in her back since she won the leadership in 2010 and is now stepping aside as Opposition leader.

In an exclusive interview with The Guardian Tuesday afternoon, Crane said she has changed her mind about staying on as Opposition leader after her resignation as PC party leader becomes effective on Wednesday.

She believes this is the only way the party can move forward from the deep divisions that have plagued the Progressive Conservatives for months.

“I felt is was important right now to leave the direction that obviously wasn’t working and try another route,” Crane said.

Crane announced in November she was quitting as leader of the PC party, effective Jan. 30. But she ruffled many feathers when she also indicated she planned to stay on as Opposition leader.

Now, Crane says she will not pursue this position.

Sitting in the Opposition leader’s office Tuesday for her last day, surrounded by banker’s boxes filled with her files, she spoke plainly about her feelings of betrayal by some within the party.

The PC backroom has been fighting against her since she won the leadership from Jamie Ballem in 2010, she said.

“I want to be very clear, we know there was a group since 2010 that tried to block me every stage, every place in the game. From 2010 they never got involved in a positive way in trying to help us grow in the direction of the party I was trying to take,” Crane said.

“Even during the election of 2011 it was no secret there were people on our own side working against us, and that’s a huge disappointment.”

Crane said she realized she could no longer continue in any kind of leadership role when her embattled stance within party was named The Guardian’s top news story of 2012.

“That was my biggest disappointment in my whole career.”

As Opposition leader, the issues she was trying to champion should have been the focus, not her struggles with party politics, she said.

“Those are the issues and Islanders are the people I want to fight for, not to be constantly fighting a few people that throw knives at your back when you’re not looking.”

She referred many times to a group of PC insiders who paid for an internal survey to gauge her level of support, then tried to force a review of her leadership last fall.

Crane called this group the party’s "backroom," and pulled no punches in her feelings about their actions.

“I want to be very clear, we know there was a group since 2010 that tried to block me every stage, every place in the game. From 2010 they never got involved in a positive way in trying to help us grow in the direction of the party I was trying to take,” - Olive Crane

She referenced a recent fake Twitter account that appeared recently, which published the details of her personal disclosure statements and other negative slurs.

“That kind of garbage, in my book, Islanders do not want, do not need and I, for one, am going to take no part of,” she said.

“My style of leadership was always more independent and challenging to the old style …the back room,” she said.

She believes her detractors would like to see her quit the party altogether.

Nonetheless Crane vowed to stay on as a PC MLA.

But now, the gloves are off.

“I’m going to sit as an MLA and represent my constituents. But I also am not going to sit silent anymore and on many issues you’re going to hear my voice often and far-reaching across P.E.I.”

She wouldn’t say which of the three candidates for interim PC leader she will support, but it is widely believed her vote will be for Hal Perry. MLA Steven Myers and unsuccessful PC MLA Linda Clements are also seeking the job.

Crane also said she plans to work actively on someone’s campaign during the party’s leadership convention, details of which have not yet been announced.

Looking back over her time as PC and Opposition leader, Crane said she is satisfied with progress she was able to affect on certain key issues, such as deputy minister accountability and the stroke unit at the QEH.

The stress caused by the efforts of some to push her from the leadership almost had her ready to quit altogether, she admitted.

But after hearing from many supporters who would tear up when seeing her in the street, asking why she was abandoning them, she said she is now re-energized to work for her constituents.

“Yes, I may not pronounce my I-N-Gs sometimes. Yes, I dress kind of funny. But I’ll tell you, I believe in Islanders, I’m proud to be an Islander and I’m proud to be a Progressive Conservative,” she said.

Her chief of staff, Kent Avery, will also be leaving his position as part of an office reorganization that will begin with Crane’s resignation as Opposition Leader.

    Sickened
    - February 1, 2013 at 11:41:20

I am saddened and sickened by the treatment Olive has received, though not surprised. I have had opportunity to sit in on some meetings with the "back room boys" and saw first hand their disdain for Olive *and* her constituents, keep that in mind please. I am proud Olive has decided to continue to represent her constituents, though I wish she would reconsider her continued faith in the party, it appears to be a one way street. Unfortunately Ghiz seems to share a disdain for rural PEI, so I'm not sure where that leaves us. Clean house anybody? Hope you see this Olive, maybe I'll fill you in on the details someday. Best of luck.

Just like Olive got ''man-handled'' by the backroom Tories, our boy premier Robert has been ''man-handled'' by his own backroom Liberals since the get-go. The real powers-that-be in PEI do not like a strong leader. They just want one that can be elected and be the poster-child but at the same time be a complete pushover to the real agenda.... driven by the corrupt PEI business community with their offshore bank accounts being stuffed by federal transfers. It sickens me. It sickens me that Ghiz never stood up to them. And it sickens me that Crane got turfed by them. These are very dark times.

Don't agree with treatment of Olive Crane...I think she did a good job. However, having said that....politics is a dirty game If she "loves" the PC party" should have gotten out long ago and not dragged the party's name through all this strife. yes there are backroom "lawyer boys" who will bring you down no matter what, but accept it for what it is....you will not win.......what has happened to you is wrong, there is no questiotn, but it is what it is and it will not get rectified soon. You did a great job but you can't fight Ch'town lawyers (PC or Liberal) ---- rest your case......you did a wonderful job....and yes if it's any consolation, my prediction is you'll be written up in history.....as a fiighter.....in any other province you'd have done well, but this is PEI, and times will not change quickly.......province is controlled by a few select groups. Just know that you made a difference and take it to heart. You were before your time!

    - January 30, 2013 at 14:50:57

which will it be? At the next election which will it be, the crooks in power or the crooks that want the power. Heaven forbid that Islanders are intelligent enough not to vote for a party because their father and grandfathers did. Polls show that they are that stupid. Enough said.

I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW MEAN AND VICIOUS PEOPLE ARE. You should all be ashame yourselves. What kind of incentive is this to anybodyn thinking of running and serving, to be pillored for doing your best. Are people really to jalous when one of our own try to serve, --- people voted for her, SHE WON, -- she did not gain her MLA status out of nowhere, and the same with becoming leader. Is the Island mentality such that we can't stand one of our own standing out, ---- can we only 'admire' and live with politicians of status???? Useless, but rich, is that what we prefer ????------ Or is it just the stupid ones that comes out and rile against a good human being for doing what she could, under the circumstances. Are some Islanders so stupified and envious that they have to need to carry on a derogatory campaign against somebody that had to resign. The party 'elite' was astute enough to bank on just those people. - Not much future for the Tory party as it has been performing, - the NDP needs to be given a chance, while the two other parties take time out to become democratic and morally viable. Meanwhile look at yourself in the mirror you mean vicious people, and see if you have horns growing out.

It is the party leader who signs a candidate's card. Nobody has justified the liberals increasing the number of signatures for a candidate to run in a provincial election. Olive Crane just gave up her salary for opposition leader and the car. How many Liberals are going to admit they are using this term in office to wrongly qualify for an MLA pension

    - January 30, 2013 at 12:55:53

When will people realize that any political party could care less about the people. The parties are their for party gain ONLY. It doesn't matter which party is in power the situation will never change until we get rid of the party system and start voting for individuals in each riding and NOT parties. This will lead to one vote in each riding on ALL Government bills and not a groupo of yes people who do as they are told by their PARTY even if they do not agree with the bill.

No matter how well everything appears, the leadership woes are there.......something had to be done......we are 12-18 months from an election...we have a very unpopular Govt in power.....and finally the NDP have emerged as a possible prov party and may be able to challenge for a seat or two.....now is the time to make changes and to get ready for a leader who is acceptable to all....All political parties including the NDP have backrooms, movers and shakers who rub their hands when elections come every 4 plus years.....they will always be there.........that's the nature of politics..lawyers CA's,financial companies, companies who bid on Prov contracts, bankers, etc all have allied them selves in some way to a party...for financial benefit. So when they quote their party line..remember ..no matter the voice someone has something to gain........If Olive is going to take her struggle further and disrupt the party...she will do herself nor the party any good....and will taint whatever good she had to offer previous..........Times are changing so has politics.......no matter the stripe.....

This is the same back room (Clarey, Murphy, Lee, Currie, Key, etc.) who conned Jamie Ballem into running for the leadership, then mismanaging his campaign, then not telling him about the support Crane had from the membership and the other candidates, then totally abandining Jamie at the leadership campaign after the defeat (they all left the building). Aside from a little rant the day after the vote, Jamie has done the honourable thing and totally got out of the way and had nothoing to do with the antics of the back room boys as he now sees what they have did to him. Now these back room boys will briung forward their choice candidate (Aylward? Lantz?) who they can control like a puppet on a string. The Tory party and the people of PEI deserve better.

It's terrible how some members of PC party have treated Olive. She's given 100% to her job and she still gets constantly criticized. I've met her in person and she's honest, straightforward, hard working, and 100% decent. She has a thankless job and I'm completely disgusted with the way she's been stabbed in the back. The real story is not on the front page of today's Guardian, it's found in the advertising insert. If anybody thinks that Plan B is just symbolic of an embarrassing and inept political and fiscal accident, take a look at page 8 of the Road Builder's Association supplement. Then look at the smiling face of Stephen Yeo. Heck, why wouldn't he be smiling? He's planb'd islanders by being Mr. Vessey's chief engineer and "ex-officio" member of the Road Builder's Board of Directors. That, my friends, is the type of thing that's driving PEI politics. Our elected MLA's are just third string puppets controlled by civil servants who are in turn being controlled by the same type of PNP/HST "back room boys" that ousted Olive Crane. Thing is, they're not so back room, are they? The question is, who has the courage to engage with those "knives" Olive speaks about? They're very, very real . . .

Yes I did and no, Health PEI employees and school board employees are not included. 4000 employees is the provincial ''bureaucracy'' fat cats sitting in Charlottetown, not the operational employees of the health authority and the school board. The 4000 employees are the ones that are triplicated with the same ones doing the exact same work in Fredericton and Halifax as well. It's a complete waste of tax resources. Living within our means as a region makes a lot more sense than paying for today's current outrageous extravagance with the credit card of future taxpayers. Believe me, it won't continue much longer so drastic changes need to happen soon because we've put it off for too long.

As a life long Tory and not involved in any back room moves or decisions; I am glad to see her make the right decision for the Tory party and the province. She was totally wrong to decide to remain as Opposition Leader after she resigns as Conservative leader. It appears that she was only interested in the salary and perks that went along with that position. She should have followed the path of Pat Mella; who resigned with class, and not looked like someone who was only in it for themselves! This decision has done the party enormous harm; which may take years for it to recover; and discourage any capable potential leadership candidates from offering as leader.

If anyone thinks two people, Olive and Robert, can cause this much chaos then we deserve the rotten government we presently have. For too long our political sense of right and wrong has been trumped by our desire for a quick hand out. It's our own short sighted greed that brings us ridiculous expenditures like Plan B; it's our desire to hide from the truth that enables the obnoxious PNP scam; it's sitting back like sheep and allowing our government to spend like drunken sailors that brings us the HST. . However, it's not time to hang our heads in shame. It's time to do contact your MLA, protest, write letters . . . just do something! We have met the enemy, and it's us . . . doing nothing!

Intobed has the best idea that I have seen in a long time!!! Forget about Liberals and Tories....forget about political parties all together. Make districts across the Island...have people run for those positions no matter what their colors are and run the province with accountability by listening to the voters, holding plebisites and referendums and bring democracy back into Island government!!!! I'm so sick of watching either the Tories or the Liberals run this province into the ground because of dishonest politics. This province would have everything it needs and it would have no debt if it wasn't for crooked politics. Something needs to change drastically here on PEI...the way we are running our governments is not working effectively....too many lawyers and businessmen are getting rich off tax payers money....money that is meant to pay for services and needs that our Island people pay taxes for. Its not right and its time for a change!! That being said....if nothing is going to change...then the least we can do is vote NDP and give someone else a chance to run this province with some respect and accountability!!!

Not sure if Intobed's suggestion is viable, but for sure something radical has to be done. Five years ago if someone had of told me about the degree of governance ineptitude and corruption in our province I would have shrugged it off as a negative attitude. However, after turning over a few rocks, my naïveté as been cured. While it was Plan B that became the tipping point for me, it could have been the HST, PNP, or any one of many wonky corporate "investments" using public money. And the list goes on. It's time for us common folk (and our performing artists!) to do something. Let's face it, our usual slack jawed hand's out approach has done nothing but make things worse for ourselves, and more importantly, for our children.

The backroom boys rolled the dice last fall... they stacked the deck then put their money down... and lost. They also left destruction in their wake... and have the nerve to claim life long affection for the party. They might have been willing to wait out the polls for election glory but they were too afraid of what Ms Crane might eventually reveal - when the PNP list was revealed the night before the PC Convention is was like something out of a Cohen Brothers movie... or Shakespearean tragic comedy. She is right on the money to say that party elite worked again her last election. I saw it. I can only say that the best medicine for this party, should any of the backroom boys install one of their own as candidates for leadership or ridings, would be, in our next election, for Olive Crane to win the only PC seat voted in ...

Olive I am glad to hear that your staying on as the MLA for your district and I don't blame you for stepping down as leader of the party. Its hard enough to fight the other political parties, but when you have people within our own party that are stabbing you in the back and asshole reporters that love to keep this shit going, I don't know how you stayed as strong as you did for as long as you did. I have to agree that you would have made one hell of a good premier and if that had happened I can tell you this much some of thoses back stabbers would still be hugging you and talking nice to you face to face hoping to get a favor or two. I wonder will these backstabbers do the same to the next leader. I certainly hope not for the sake of the party. My opinion is this, a party that can't stay together and remain loyal to their leader isn't worth fighting for.

@Merge the Maritimes: so you think that eliminating political parties, reforming our provincial government along the lines of a moderately sized municipality, and having a consensus style of government that has to listen to its constituents is "horse and buggy era of thinking"? Do you really think NS and NB politics is any less corrupt and inefficient than ours? Grow up. Major changes are indeed coming, and this is a chance for PEI to be in the forefront, rather than relegated to being a minor suburb of Moncton.

The fact is this island IS a minor suburb of Moncton, just like Cumberland County, Albert County and Kent County. PEI is not special in a jurisdictional sense and never have been throughout its history. It is special in a geographic sense and that will never change but we don't need a separate provincial government to have that feeling. Young people are voting with their feet and leaving this island and it's because there is too much government, too much regulation, too much corporate welfare to the privileged class, too many people tied to their little postage stamp sized communities that are quickly depopulating under their very feet, too many people tied to old ideas that have lost favour with the rest of the country. And the Liberals and Tories of this island would have you believe that this place matters. Fact is, it doesn't. PEI is merely a rural farming area connected by a 9 mile bridge in a rural region that has 3 large'ish towns (Halifax, Moncton and Saint John). What PEI does have though is a heck of a lot of government wasting its time and our money trying to appear to matter in the 21st century. I'd much rather us merge into a larger province and remain a regional municipality than have the likes of Duffy and Harper dictating the terms when equalization gets completely slashed next year. Don't be so insecure about the province thing. And from the reaction you provided with the ''grow up'' comment to a debate that HAS to happen on this island, it sounds like you're the one that needs to improve your maturity a bit. Cheers.

@merge: If PEI merged into a lager maritime province, it would quickly be discovered that the Irvings have a powerful lobby group in the current NB government, and PEI's laws regarding land holdings, fracking, and many others would be out the window. PEI would become just a few giant farms owned by the Irvings growing GMO crops, with no usable groundwater for the few people remaining to drink. Things really need to change, but throwing away PEI to spite our politicians is just foolish.

I completely agree with you on consensus style of government. PEI should be a municipality with 12 municipal councilors and 1 mayor with no political party involved (municipal government). In the larger provincial government of the Maritimes you can have party politics but the seats in the legislature should be capped at 60 MLAs. Dividing the seats strictly by population of 1.8 million would give PEI (145,000 people) about 6 seats, 24 to New Brunswick (750,000) and 30 to Nova Scotia (950,000). So we would go from 500+ municipal & provincial politicians in PEI to 19. I also think we should drop our number of MPs from 4 to 1. Most ridings across Canada for the House of Commons have 130,000 or more residents. PEI's current political system makes zero sense from a fiscal standpoint in the 21st century.

Mrs. Crane I agree with you fully. The ones that wants you out are hiding the PNP money they got and God knows what else. Think back to 2010 that’s when you said that you would open the books FULLY on the PNP and that’s when your trouble stated but the members of the PC party are too dumb to see that they were LIED to. But the day will come in the next election when the pc party is in 3rd place. And as it has been said a few times PC insiders who paid for an internal survey to gauge her level of support, then tried to force a review of her leadership last fall. This survey can be set up any way you want as the people that paid for it wants the numbers there way so that’s how it came out. Mrs. Crane vowed to stay on as a PC MLA.But now, the gloves are off. GREAT MORE POWER TO YOU. But the ones that helped put you out will see how they were USED by the backroom babies. And you will see them coming to you and saying they are sorry for being taken in. mars crane you know that if MLA Linda Clements was to win she will go thru the same hell as you and pat went thru. I just wish you and pat would come forward and tell who and what was said behind closed doors why you and pat left. I know pat was forced out same as you and I bet it was by the same people. We true islanders will miss you. And by the way you do not dress funny and your hair is nicely done but some members of the house needs to keep their fingers out of the light sockets that way the hair will not look like air plane wing. Best of luck Mrs. Crane islanders will miss your leader ship.

If we learn anything from history is that we do NOT learn from history. Look what happened t the Federal Liberals around the time of Chretien's resignation. When will parties realize that fighting among themselves will make them lose credibility with the electors?

Instead of destroying ourselves as a province, why not abolish any and all political parties? Divide PEI into twelve districts, and have the representatives of each district run as independents. All twelve representatives would reach consensus on decisions with continuous input from their constituents through polls, referendums, plebiscites, and town hall meetings. It is the political parties that are destroying politics on PEI, not the province itself.

I don't know why you are so insecure about losing ''province'' status. Exactly what is it that makes it so special to you? PEI would do much much better and be more efficiently run as a single regional municipality. In a single stroke of the pen, eliminate the 74 patronage-graft-strewn ineffective tiny municipalities that dot the countryside and can't do one thing right. At the same time, get rid of the Government of Prince Edward Island. We create the Prince Edward Island Regional Municipality within the Province of the Maritimes. PEI would still have a single health authority and a single school board. But we would have much improved provincial oversight and laws and regulations which would come from a legislature that draws from a much larger talent pool than our tiny shores could ever provide. And our provincial level services (health, education, etc.) would be funded by a much larger tax base as well. Local government services (secondary & tertiary roads, water & sewer, parks, etc.) would be funded as any municipality - by property taxes. And we would have province-wide land use planning and zoning - a requirement in the 21st century. And we would have 4,000 fewer civil servants to have to pay a salary toward - at an average of $60,000 salary, that is $250 million a year in savings alone. PEI does not need to be a province now and never has before either. The horse and buggy era of thinking that you exhibit is rapidly coming to an end so consider this to be a ''heads-up'' about the level of sweeping changes that people are demanding on this island.

MERGE THE MARITIMES - 4000 Civil Servants? I recognize the ultimate functions of a healthy government, but do you believe that slashing the jobs of the kind of a number is smart? Do you think the regional province would retain those people? Of course not. In no time, you've saved some cash, but you've also eliminating 4000 tax paying employees. Eliminating the jobs elimates people, and cash flow in the form of tax revenue. I'm not opposed to hearing more on amalgamating the maritimes, and cutting back positions in needed places, but exercise a little thinking before you speak.

@ SAD TO SEE OLIVE GO You apparently like spending other people's money. Those 4000 provincial civil servants get paid their salaries largely by equalization money coming from other parts of Canada. If PEI cannot pay for its budget from within its own shores. PEI should give up province status and merge with NB and NS to form a larger tax base and less government that provides more effective public services. The public sector should never be a make-work program in any jurisdiction.
