ALBERTON -- Alberton Town Councilor Krystyna Pottier received unanimous support from council Monday night on a motion concerning Western Hospital and emergency room coverage.

The motion asks for a letter to be forwarded to the Premier and the Health Minister expressing council’s very deep concern with the closures of the hospital’s emergency department during January and the apparent lack of physicians available to cover the ER.

The motion also seeks a meeting with the premier and the minister, either in Alberton or Charlottetown, to discuss the situation, and for the premier and the minister to increase efforts to recruit physicians willing to cover the hospital’s ER.

The provincial government announced at the start of the month there are 12 time slots during January when the ER will be closed because physician coverage is not available.

Council will be seeking motions of support from the communities of O’Leary, Tignish and Northport.

A public forum on the ER situation is set for Thursday at Westisle gymnasium.

People divided their health care in West Prince by refusing a single hospital offered by the Conservatives. It was the former Binns government that offered the solution operating four hospitals in Prince County is bad medicine

Just wondering why a nurse practitioner can't be hired into the ER to attend to patients with the Dr. on call in Summerside to provide guidance and backup if a problem arises?
