Bill Schurman

The University of Prince Edward Island announced today that sport promoter Bill Schurman will become its new director of athletics and recreation, effective Feb. 4.

Schurman most recently has been general manager of the Greater Summerside Chamber of Commerce and management consultant for the Summerside Storm professional basketball team. He also well known for having worked with the Moncton Wildcats and Lewiston Maineiacs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and for his tenure with the City of Summerside as director of community services and public relations and director of recreation and parks.

Schurman replaces Ron Annear who served as athletics director for the last eight years.

“UPEI is excited to welcome Bill to campus at a time where both the varsity program and recreation and wellness initiatives are well poised to move to the next level. We are confident that Bill has the right blend of vision and experience in sport administration to drive Panther Sport to new heights,” said Jackie Pdger, vice president of administration and finance. “We sincerely thank Ron for his leadership and are pleased that he will remain with the department and continue to play a significant role.”

Schurman played an active role in the initial planning and the opening of Credit Union Place, in establishing Summerside’s reputation as “Canada’s tournament town,” and for leading major events in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island such as the Memorial Cup, International Hydroplane Regatta and numerous national hockey, golf, and baseball championships.

“It is an honour and a privilege to have the opportunity to serve the UPEI community and to become a part of its rich athletic history. Throughout my career, I have been privileged to wear the logos representing many outstanding organizations committed to excellence. I will be excited to wear the Panther emblem and to continue the mission to be the very best,” said Schurman.

Panther Sport has student athletes, coaches and staff participating in nine varsity sport programs. Last year, a record 57 UPEI student athletes were named Academic All-Canadians by Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS).

UPEI has hosted national, and regional events including several CIS national championships, the 2009 Canada Summer Games, a variety of Atlantic University Sport championships and is the province’s most comprehensive community sport facility and destination.

Funny how the people on here that post negative comments never show their real name. Back stabbers I guess you would call then. Afraid to release there identity. Also facts would be great in your comments vrs. Options based on nothing! Bill throwen out of Moncton. Ha on the reverse the door with out Cata is always open for him! That comes from mr Irving. Who I am sure you back stabbers would also have a problem with. The four plexi? Ask us the parents of kids that play minor hockey there just how much Bill cleaned up the place! We appreciated everything he did to improve the facility. Oh I am sure some émployees that had to be accountable under his guard would be on happy. He drives a tight shipped! However leads totally by example. Tough that a guy gets head hunted for all the great work he provides. UPEI will benefit from this move by bringing up their success a few notches. I would challenge anyone to spend a day with Bill, none of you jealous. Back stabbers ashamed to stand up with your name would even last until noon! Success comes from effort! That Bill gives 24 hours a day. Miss you in moncton! Best of luck with your new challenge.

OK....so Billy Boy is going to UPEI eh? No doubt our great NBL team the Summerside Storm will very soon follow as the Charlottetown Cyclone! Odds are CONSIDERABLY better than winning any lottery or even a 50-50. I give it 60 to 90 days after he gets to UPEI for the Storm owners to make the announcement...anyone agree?

What? This guy has had 4 jobs since 2010 - he got run out of Moncton (heard staff at 4 plex and Wildcats were all ready to jump ship), his one year in the US and the team there was toast, went back and his buddy Bazil, the mayor of Summerside gives him a job, then his time with the Chamber in Summerside likely is done as there are no more bridges to burn, now we are stuck with him at UPEI - wonder how long that will last until it implodes? It will implode.

What a shame for Summerside to lose such a key player and supporter. Mr Schurman has done a great many things in his career and UPEI is incredibly lucky to have him. I and many others will miss his presence in Summerside. Congrats Bill!

I do not know this man personally but I do know that he was not liked by a number of people who worked WITH him (not FOR him as he thought). Many people celebrated when he left Summerside but then, he came back. Then he left again, then came back. Summerside keeps finding a job for him !! Why?? I hope this works out for him so that Summerside is rid of him. There are people in Summerside who have worked hard for Summerside and they are the ones who deserve to get these jobs that Summerside offers to Mr. Billy Schurman !!

Mayor Stewart can stop floating it around about Billy being the next CAO of the City. Best of luck Billy, wise move to get out of this City, with all the cover ups and mistruths fltyng from the Mayors Office, senior councilors, senior management and others.

i think I figured it out.....He gets a job, stays for a short period so they dont realize how self centered he is and dont get to the point were they realize he is not the best person for the job. Leaves on his own terms. Smart really! I dont think he has held a job for longer then 2 years. Bet you he will be done at UPEI within 2 years

Congratulations to Billy! UPEI's gain will be our lost, but it's nice to know that Bill has shown Summerside stays on his radar no matter where he is... good luck!

The reason Bill Schurman can,t keep a job is the fact that he is so good at what he does,he is sought after by many in the Sports field. I am sure Bill did not go to UPEI for less monies, and Bill always puts heart and soul into his projects.Congrats Bill Schurman, .

First of all a large thank you to Ron for his work over the last number of years. He brought the Athletic Dept to national prominence as a place for students to attend. Congratulations to Bill Schurman. I know with his energy & commitment the Athletic Dept. will grow & flourish. Those attending UPEI & are involved in any of the athletic programs will benefit signifigantly.
