SUMMERSIDE – The city has hired a director of communications to better inform the public, municipal departments and city council.

Lorri Laughlin is joining the city staff after having worked in this field with the Government of Canada for more than 15 years, holding positions with the Privy Council Office, Communications Canada and the Canadian Information Office.

“There will definitely be a strong external component and there’ll also be a strong internal component to improve communications between departments and also to council,” Laughlin said. “There’s a lot of support I can give and some advice and trying to set up some communications priorities that council wants to see delivered. That’s what we’re here to do, is to fulfill the priorities and the mandate that the mayor and the council have set out. I want to support that.”

Acting Chief Administrative Officer, Gordon MacFarlane, said the city wants to improve its methods of getting information out to the public.

“We’re extremely excited to have Lorri on board,” MacFarlane said. “She brings a wealth of experience and we’re looking forward to her helping us professionalize our communications strategy, get the information out to the public that the public desires, and some of the things that our city staff is doing that we may not be communicating as well as we should be.”

Laughlin holds a Bachelor of Public Relations Degree, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics and Political Science, and a Diploma in Public Administration.

This comes about 15 yrs to late, with an individual such as this, all the coverups like the Griffin Fiasco, Concert Fiasco than the arranged cover up of the Hopping Report just to mention a couple, just may have been handled the right and honest way. Good luck Lorri Laughlin, you have four honest Councillors to deal with, be very careful of the gang of five.

The province has to reduce the civil service, Summerside hires people we don't need. Summerside stops getting sued , Summerside won't need a communication officer

A good spot for Lorri to begin would be for her to release the whole Hopping Report. If she does not the public would be free to view her ,infuture ,as a " spin doctor'.
