Unique fundraiser supports PCH Auxiliary

SUMMERSIDE — The Mistletoe Mall is back.

Prince County Hospital Auxiliary’s Susan Cameron shows off just a sampling of the items that will be available during the upcoming Mistletoe Mall.

The Prince County Hospital Ladies Auxiliary first held the unique fundraiser a decade ago after auxiliary member Susan Cameron came up with the idea.

“I had read a story in one of the Chicken Soup books about this guy who… had a plastic dinosaur clipped to his jacket,” recalled the long-time auxiliary member. “He wore it proudly because his little fellow had bought it at a school sale called the Mistletoe Mall, where kids could buy things for their friends and their family.”

Cameron, a volunteer at the Prince County Hospital gift shop at the time, approached the manager with the idea.

Merchandise that as collecting dust at the store, along with donated items, were sold during the very first Mistletoe Mall, held at the old nurse’s residence.

That first event raised more than $1,500 for the auxiliary, which, in turn, used the money to purchase items for the hospital.

“It was an amazing success. It usually averages between $500 and $700 when we had it before,” said Cameron. “It’s not the purpose to make a lot of money.”

Auxiliary president Marie Salamoun-Dunne added, “The real reason is to give children an opportunity to benefit the hospital and, at the same time, shop cheaply for their parents and just pick up little gifts.”

Only a handful of Mistletoe Malls have been held since and just one held at the current Prince County Hospital since it opening.

“We sent invitations around to kindergartens, daycares and places like that. Everything was priced between $1 and $10. There’s nothing over $10, taxes included,” explained Cameron. “We have a couple of ladies that are set up to do the gift wrapping for them so when the kids leave there they are all done.”

The Mistletoe Mall takes place from 4 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 14, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 15 in the hospital’s St. Lawrence Room. A wide variety of items are on offer, including ornaments, scarves, jewelry, decorative items, purses and teddy bears.

Pizza will be available for purchase in the hospital coffee shop on the Friday evening and the auxiliary’s Wishing Well Gift Shop will have a sale on both days.

The Mistletoe Mall is one of three fundraising events being held in December by the Prince County Hospital Auxiliary.

Auxiliary members are selling tickets on a Christmas basket and will be back at County Fair Mall offering their gift-wrapping expertise to holiday shoppers.
