SUMMERSIDE  - An off-duty Summerside police officer was arrested following a two-vehicle accident Nov. 5 at the intersection of Central Street and Pope Road.

Topics :
RCMP , Prince County Hospital

Summerside Deputy Police Chief Sinclair Walker said alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor and there was extensive damage to both vehicles.

The female driver of one of the vehicles was taken to Prince County Hospital and later released.

The off-duty Summerside police officer was taken into custody as he was alleged to be one of the drivers.

The officer involved has been on extended leave for the past 11 months.

The RCMP were requested to assist in the investigation, which is continuing.

Walker said it is customary to call on an outside police agency to assist in an investigation when a police officer is involved. The name of the off-duty officer has not been released and no charges have been laid, according to an RCMP spokesperson.

No further details are being released at this time.

If some normal citizen makes one small, wrong decision, their name is posted all over the Journal. A cop is driving under the influence and he has his name withheld... He could have killed someone, and his name would probably still be withheld. Post his name. He made the mistake and he should suffer like the rest of the people who did silly mistakes that were not nearly as severe as this!

It's a good thing his name wasn't published...If it had been, you'd all have to think of something else to whine about!! It's gotta be a cover up or something...I mean really, how could it be anything else? Conspiracy theories abound!! As for the police being corrupt...well, if that's the case, why don't you do something about it instead of flapping your gums? Talk is cheap...actions speak louder than words... The list goes on. And just because one person makes a bad decision doesn't mean everyone in their profession is the same...

This reminds me of when I was at MacDonalds drive thru when I was 19(20 years ago) and one of the Summerside Police Officers came over to talk to my boyfriend at the time who was driving with a beer in hand and the cop did nothing. You see my boyfriend at the time provided them with late night food from a Summerside restaurant for free, so he was not concerned in the least that he was seen by him. And to my surprise, the COP did not care!!! I guess times have not changed. Sad that we can trust noone in power anymore.

Throw the book at him!! An impaired driver deserves no special treatment no matter what they do for a living. As a member of the police force he should be ashamed. I wonder if he ever had to knock on someone's door to tell them they lost a loved one because someone made the choice to drive impaired.

yes, he may have been impaired people... however he is HUMAN like the rest of us . people make mistakes, bad judgement calls all the time. etc... it says he's been on extended leave for the last eleven months.... we dont know anyones story and people deal differently with stressful situations.... yes again driving under the influence is wrong,, but theres no need to crucify anyone. names will be released all in good time , youll all have to wait . thats all

I also agree that the name should be posted this "officer" is supposed to be protecting us and abiding by the law not drinking and driving this could have been a lot worse then it was and he should be treated the same as any other person who broke the law !!

I have no comments about the off duty Police Officer but I do have concerns about Deputy Chief Walkers comments about having another Police Agency investiagte their own. Who was braught in to investigate the testimony of several Summerside Police Officers in the Ford Case of Home Invasion of an elderly man. Judge Jeff Lantz made public statements about the evasive testimony, evidence tampered with, note books lost etc. This is the officer Judge Labtz identified as being in charge of that case. I would ask Chief Poirier, who was called in to investigate that mess? I was told the majority of these Officers graduated from the Police Academy. One would hope this is not part of Police training. I would assume our Mayor and Councillor Holman are well aware of this incident.

so a drunk driving police officer gets to avoid having his name run through the mud in this paper but a couple of kids grabbing some burgers after a little weed are crucified, perhaps you'd like to take a look at at the vehicular mortality rates between THC and alcohol and we can see who the real menace is.
