David Tarenta of Belfast has been identified as the victim of Wednesday’s industrial accident at Superior Sanitation in Charlottetown.

Charlottetown Police Services were called to the business located at 15 Superior Cresent just before 2 p.m. Tarenta, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Darren Riggs of Superior Sanitation told The Guardian Thursday the company was prepared only to make the following statement: “At this time our thoughts are with David’s family and friends.’’

Not many details have emerged yet surrounding the workplace fatality.

Bill Reid, director of Occupational Health and Safety, says Tarenta was killed after being struck by a sanitation truck shortly before 2 p.m. Reid says the investigation, being conducted by two Occupational Health and Safety officers, could take weeks or even months to complete.

The investigation will focus on determining whether all reasonable precautions were taken to avoid creating an unsafe situation. If not, the company could be charged under the Occupational Health and Safety Act of P.E.I.

“The foremost priority is to ensure that this doesn’t happen again,’’ said Reid.
