RCMP officers on P.E.I. are warning the public about a telephone scam regarding their own organization.

Mounties are taking part in a benefit hockey game against Andrews Hockey at the Jack Frost Children's WinterFest this weekend in support of the Children's Wish Foundation.

The scam involves a phone call from someone pretending to be fundraising for the event.

The RCMP says it does not solicit donations over the phone for this or any other event. Fundraising for the game this weekend will be conducted on a donation basis and neither team is involved in ticket sales.

Anyone receiving such a phone call is advised to hang up and report the call to police. Anyone who has a caller ID function on their phone is asked to take note of the number the call came from.
