John Bonnell was arrested by city police on June 21, after law enforcement officials received a tip that he would be delivering hydromorphone capsules to a Summerside residence.

Police arrived at the address and found Bonnell’s vehicle there.

Police seized 14 18-mg hydromorphone capsules and three 4-mg dilaudid pills.

Bonnell denied any involvement in selling the drugs and told police it was for his personal use.

The value of the drugs was set between $800 and $900.

Defense counsel Trish Cheverie said, since the arrest, her client has undergone detoxification procedures and is now free of his addiction to the drug.

Cheverie said her client remained in this jurisdiction dispute having an opportunity for employment in western Canada.

She said the issue was one of finances for Bonnell and his partner. He has five children.

In handing down the fine, Supreme Court Justice Gordon Campbell cautioned Bonnell, that he must make a conscious effort, while working in western Canada, to remain drug free.
