The former Canada Games rowing coach convicted of stealing money from the team's bank account to use for her own purposes is going to jail.

Cynthia Michelle Burton was sentenced this morning to serve four months in the provincial correctional centre for theft over $5000.

Supreme Court Judge Benjamin Taylor sentenced Burton to a further four months in jail for fraud over $5,000.

Both sentences are to run concurrently.

Upon completion of her jail sentence Burton will spend 18 months on probation.

As part of her probation she must pay restitution in the sum of $4,000.

Burton plans to appeal the conviction and sentence.
