The Cat Action Team of Prince Edward Island has received a $10,000 grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada.
The grant will be used to spay or neuter about 85 free-roaming cats in West Prince County.
“We are excited to be able to increase the total number of cats spayed and neutered in West Prince County,” said Bob Stanley, president of CAT.
“We have recently discovered several new feral colonies in that area, and we want to bring their numbers under control as soon as we possibly can.”
The Cat Action Team (CAT) was established in 2000 to improve the lives of stray, feral and barn cats on the island, and to reduce their population, by humanely trapping and sterilizing unowned, free-ranging cats.
After sterilization, the cats are tattooed, vaccinated against rabies and other diseases, and returned to the area where they were trapped.
Most live in colonies that are tended by CAT volunteers.
Although trap-neuter-release is the primary purpose of CAT, the nonprofit, all-volunteer organization also strives to provide medical care, shelter, and food for the cats.
CAT estimates that at least 6,000 cats have passed through its program.
There is a waiting list of over 100 cats in West Prince County. Island-wide, CAT is aware of over 1,000 cats in need of sterilization.
PetSmart Charities of Canada is a registered charity that creates and supports programs that save the lives of homeless pets, raise the awareness of companion animal welfare issues, and promote healthy relationships between people and pets.
