SUMMERSIDE - A drunken scheme for free money has earned a Grand River man seven days in jail.

Roger James Milligan, 56, pleaded guilty Wednesday in Provincial Court to two counts of fraud.

A local bank contacted Summerside police officers informing them about surveillance footage showing two men depositing empty envelopes into the ATM between May 28 and 30.

One of the men was identified as Milligan, who used his own bank card and PIN number to access the bank machine.

Milligan was found to have made fake deposits totaling $2,416, while withdrawing a total of $500 in cash.

When police questioned Milligan he admitted he was, "on a drunk and needed the money."

Milligan has an unrelated prior record.

Judge Jeff Lantz said the chances of getting away with the crime were "pretty slim" given Milligan had used his personal bank account.

The seven days will be served on consecutive weekends. Milligan will be on probation for one year and must make restitution of $500 to the bank.
