SUMMERSIDE - A 21-year-old Moncton man was convicted today in Summerside Provincial Court of luring a minor over the Internet.
Craig Jay Lee Edgar will be sentenced Aug. 24, pending a pre-sentence report.
The Internet luring law, persuant to section 172.1 of the Criminal Code of Canada, is relatively new and untested. The matter has garnered national attention from legal experts.
Judge Jeff Lantz handed down his decision this afternoon, saying the Crown proved that Edgar intended to facilitate a future offence with a P.E.I. girl who, at the time, was 13 years old.
Edgar met the girl in the summer of 2008 and the pair soon began exchanging emails and chatting on MSN Messenger. Emails and chat logs showed the conversations became increasingly sexual in nature.
Edgar admitted in his statement he had intentionally communicated via computer with the girl knowing she was under the age of 16.
Lantz was also satisfied that Edgar's conduct made another Criminal Code offence more probable, since the two exchanged emails about having sex "for real" in the future.
