TIRANA, Albania - The prosecutor general's office says two Albanian special unit guardsmen have been arrested over the deaths of four people shot during an anti-government demonstration last month.
The office said in a statement Wednesday that the two officers from the Guard of the Republic, which is tasked with protecting government institutions and officials, were the main suspects in the deaths of the four people following clashes with security forces in Tirana. Another 150 people were injured in the violence.
The opposition Socialists have accused the government of corruption and are demanding that conservative Prime Minister Sali Berisha calls new elections. Berisha has dismissed the demand and accused the opposition of trying to stage a coup.
