Commercial haulers are urged to transport larger-than-normal loads before spring weight restrictions are in place.
While weight restrictions are in effect, no over-weight vehicles are permitted on the provinces all-weather highways such as routes 1,1A, 2, and 3 said Transportation Minister Robert Vessey.
“Once pavement temperatures stay consistently above freezing, weight restrictions will be put into place to prevent damage to roadways from over-weight loads.”
On roads not affected by restrictions, the weight of the vehicle and its load must total no more than 75 per cent of the vehicles maximum allowable weight.
When temperatures begin to climb, some roads risk being damaged by heavy vehicles.
Vessey said water from melted ice and snow seeps into cracks in the thawing pavement and into the gravel underneath then it re-freezes and expands, breaking the pavement and causing potholes.
