NORTH CAPE - Oliver Engel admits it's like looking for a needle in a haystack but he's determined to try.
This October he plans to help search for a missing German submarine that might be on the ocean floor somewhere off North Cape.
Engel is from Germany. He became interested in the sub after viewing a map of shipwrecks around P.E.I. during a vacation here last year. He saw a mark showing where a German submarine might have been lost during the Second World War.
The missing sub has become somewhat of a legend in Western P.E.I. where some area residents claim to have witnessed an attack on a German submarine off North Cape on May 7, 1943. The fact that a sub from the German fleet remains unaccounted for adds to the drama.
"I started to investigate in Tignish, Charlottetown, Ottawa and in Cuxhaven in Germany," Engel said.
Engel said arrangements are being made with a Tignish area fisher to help conduct a search after the fall lobster fishery. Specific locations for the search will be determined in July, he said.
