ALBERTON - The second group of volunteers from this year's Katimavik rotation left Alberton on Thursday and headed off to a placement in Ontario. Their departure makes room for a new group that's moving into the Alberton Katimavik house Friday.
The new group is in for a treat admits Tiya Sisson from Toronto. She has been treating Alberton as home for the past two months.
"The people are really what make Alberton special," she said. "They are so friendly and open which makes it really easy to feel like part of the community."
The second group completed their volunteer placements and were packing as many activities into their final days in the Alberton area as possible. They finally got to experience a touch of P.E.I. winter, tubing and snowshoeing at Mill River Provincial Park earlier in the week.
Kendra Burdett is project leader in Alberton and is looking forward to introducing the new group of volunteers to the community.
"They have an action-packed schedule and a long list of opportunities to engage with and learn from community members," she said. Those opportunities include curling lessons and sharing meals with neighbours.
While living in Alberton, the volunteers will be working on special projects at Rev. W.J. Phillips Residence, Kids West Inc., Alberton Town Hall, the Canadian Mental Health Association, West Prince Chamber of Commerce, Le centre prescolaire L'Arc-en-ciel, Ecole Pierre-Chiasson, Le Conseil RÉvÉrand S.E. Perrey, Alberton Public Library, Alberton Elementary School and Tignish Elementary School.
During their month in Alberton, the third group will, be developing their leadership skills through involvement in community events. Katimavik encourages community members to provide suggestions.
Burdett is looking forward to hearing from anyone who would like to have Katimavik volunteers attend or assist with their events.
