OTTAWA - Ontario police are on the lookout for thieves who may not know that the truck and trailer they stole this morning near Montreal contains a tiger and two camels.
Jonas the tiger and camels called Todd and Sean, were stolen just before 7 a.m. as the truck and trailer were parked behind a motel in St. Liboire, east of Montreal, near St. Hyacinthe.
The animals were being transported from Nova Scotia back to their home at the Bowmanville Zoo, located just east of Toronto.
Hot weather has created concern for the animals that they may not be ventilated or given enough to drink as the thieves haul around their stolen cargo, says Michael Hackenberger, director of the Bowmanville Zoo.
"As hot as it's going to get today, they could be in huge distress," said Hackenberger. "They could even die."
Jonas the tiger is in an internal cage inside the trailer so he can't escape, however the camels could walk off the trailer if the side door is opened. Hackenberger says there is no threat posed by the camels because they are "nice" camels.
Police are looking for a black Ford F550 pick up truck with an Ontario licence plate number of 9091XS.
The aluminum EBY brand trailer, which resembles the kind used to haul livestock, has an Ontario licence plate number of E4398Y.
