St. Eleanor's -
The search for the person responsible for striking a gas pump while driving a U-Haul at the St. Eleanor's Circle K Irving has extended off-Island.
"We have identified the male who rented the truck," said Summerside Police Chief Dave Poirier. "This person left the province shortly after the incident happened."
Poirier said Summerside Police officers are now working with police off-Island to track down the man.
As the investigation continues, Irving has yet to determine the cost of the incident or cost responsibilities.
Liza Dube, an Irving Oil Marketing spokesperson, said before a dollar amount is tallied, the extent of the damage caused on May 29 needs to be determined.
"So far we have removed many tonnes of soil impacted by the release of fuel caused by the driver striking a fuel dispenser," Dube said.
She said Irving is trying to identify the specific boundaries of the spill in all directions.
Excavators were on site Monday morning continuing to dig up possibly contaminated soil from underneath the pump island. All fuel dispensers have now been removed from the site.
Dube also said Irving is "continuously monitoring" the groundwater in the Summerside area.
"The plan is once the full extent has been determined, to continue removing the impacted soil on the site," she said.
