SUMMERSIDE - Gently used clothing is the latest fashion trend hitting runways this spring.
The Salvation Army and East Prince Youth Development's Parent Power are teaming up to host a fashion show Wednesday to raise money for the Army's camp program.
With "Affordable Business Wear" as the theme, the event will showcase inexpensive recycled business clothing modelled by eight young women currently in the Parent Power program.
"People are always feeling that they need to buy new and we want to show that you don't have to break the bank to look nice for work," said Parent Power job coach Nancy Beth Guptill.
Parent power is a six-month employability program to help unemployed single parents between 15 and 30 prepare to enter the workforce.
Not only will models present affordable fashion, they will also each give a short speech about helpful employment pointers they've learned in the program.
Topics include how to write a professional resume, dress for success and make a good first impression.
Although 100 per cent of money raised will go towards the Salvation Army's camp program, Parent Power feels that it's gaining a great deal from the event.
"We are in it for the experience of our participants," said Guptill. "It will help them build skill development and confidence."
Salvation Army's Marj Montgomery said the organization is very fortunate to have Parent Power involved.
"We are very thankful they will be assisting us," said Montgomery. "They are helping us show people the quality of our used clothing."
Montgomery wants the public to know that while Salvation Army clothing is gently used there are still many name brand items.
"We have clothing that would be $100 at other stores and you can get it here for two," she said.
The event takes place at the Salvation Army Church on Pope Road at 6 p.m.
A total of 100 tickets will be sold at $10 each. Soup and sandwiches will be served. Tickets may be purchased through Salvation Army in Summerside or Parent Power.
