CHARLOTTETOWN – The P.E.I. 2014 Celebration Zone has presented an opportunity for the members of Confederation Centre’s two youth theatre troupes to come together for an inspiring musical performance.

Members of the Confederation Centre Young Company performing in their free noon-time presentation “We Are Canadian” at the centre’s outdoor amphitheatre. The Young Company, along with members of the Confederation Players, also perform in “Soul of the Island” in the P.E.I. 2014 Celebration Zone, Wednesday to Saturday at 3 p.m. until Aug. 23.

“Soul of the Island” is a spirited musical and theatre piece presented four times a week by the Confederation Centre Young Company and the Confederation Players. This show is a tribute to the music and cultures that have shaped P.E.I., and is performed in the Celebration Zone in Downtown Charlottetown, Wednesday to Saturday, from 3 to 3:30 p.m.

Inspired by the 2009 Young Company production of the same name, which was performed at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, “Soul of the Island” features 14 Young Company performers and eight Confederation Players. Four ‘Young, Young Company’ members - emerging school-age children from P.E.I. - round out this ensemble.

Selections include: the founding story of Glooscap; a historic vignette and waltz depicting the 1864 Fathers of Confederation; the Slaymaker and Nichols’ “Olympic Circus;” “Gee I’m Glad I’m No One Else But Me” from “Anne of Green Gables – The Musical;” Margie Carmichael’s “Red Dirt Road,” Stompin’ Tom’s “Bud the Spud,” a kitchen party step dance set to a selection of Richard Wood tunes, and much more.

Soul of the Island runs until Aug. 23 and is directed by Kerry Gage and Anne Allan, the artistic director of the Charlottetown Festival. Jacqueline Sadler, musical director, wrote the lyrics and music for the songs “Soul of the Island” and “We Are Canadian.”

The Young Company also performs the musical “We Are Canadian,” Monday to Friday at 12 noon in Confederation Centre’s outdoor amphitheatre.Thisis a free public show that also runs until Aug. 23.

Gage, director of “We Are Canadian,” invites the public to attend this year’s new musical.

“’We Are Canadian’ is a high octane showcase of song and dance. It features the music, dance styles, languages, and cultures that have contributed to our diverse and beautiful Canada. Come join 14 of Canada's incredible young performers and celebrate being Canadian.”

The show profiles many nations that form the fabric of Canada’s cultural mosaic. New cultures represented this year include Acadian, Caribbean, and Western European.

The 2014 cast comes from as far west as Port Moody, B.C. It also features P.E.I.’s  Melissa MacKenzie and Alex Kelly.
