CHARLOTTETOWN – Vile Passéist Theatre's “In the Telling,” a family-friendly adaptation of George Peele's 1595 play “The Old Wives Tale,” will be the first show to tour to all three maritime fringe theatre festivals. First stop is the Island Fringe, Aug. 7 to 10, in Charlottetown.

Vile Passéist Theatre's “In the Telling” stars Kristi Anderson, Danielle Doiron, and Colleen MacIsaac, as well as Jozel Bennett (missing from photo).

The theatrical production will then continue on to the Fundy Fringe, Aug. 20 to 24 in Saint John, N.B., and the Atlantic Fringe Aug. 28 to Sept. 7 in Halifax, N.S.

Sorcery, spirits, and song collide in this fantastic tangle of a tale. When three young adventurers lose their way in the forest, they become part of a much larger story that may finally lead them to their quarry: The White Bear of the Woods. “In the Telling” is a story about family, transformation, and magic.

“In the Telling” features several firsts for Vile Passéist, a Halifax-based company founded in 2009: this will be their first all-ages show, their first full adaptation of an early-modern text, and the first time the company has gone on tour.

"We're looking forward to challenging ourselves and experimenting with some new techniques," says director Dorian Lang.

After Atlantic Fringe Festival director Thom Fitzgerald suggested the idea, Vile Passéist decided to take the show on a tour of all three Maritime Fringe Fests.

Says Lang, "The Fringe circuit is the perfect place to try out new ideas and have some fun, and we're excited to be sharing our work with new audiences across the Maritimes.

"It is fabulous that these great festivals have come together to provide Atlantic Canadian artists with a chance to present work on an national stage,” added Lang. “’In the Telling’ is the perfect match for a Fringe tour – it draws on intriguing source material from 400 years ago and turns it into an adventure for all ages, with music and comedy.”

“In the Telling's” script was adapted collaboratively by Dan Bray (Best Playwright winner at Atlantic Fringe Festival 2013), Lang, and Colleen MacIsaac. The production premieres new music composed by Jenny Trites (2014 Merritt Award nominee for Outstanding Original Score).

The cast features Kristi Anderson, who has worked extensively with DaPoPo Theatre, and previously performed with VPT in “The Roaring Girl: A New Musical,” along with Jozel Bennett, a frequent performer with Lions Den Theatre, previously seen with VPT in “Doctor Faustus.” The other stars of the show are Danielle Doiron, a recent graduate of Neptune Theatre's pre-professional training program, recently seen in “Spring Awakening” and “Daughters & Sisters: The Shakespeare Project”, and Colleen MacIsaac, VPT's executive director, seen recently in “A Tournament of Lies,” “Waiting for the Parade,” and with the Xara Choral Theatre.
