Best of the Island concert series continues each Saturday night in August
CHARLOTTETOWN – Spotlight PEI presents the hottest names from the Island’s booming music scene on Saturday nights at Confederation’s Centre cabaret theatre, The Mack. The concert series continues this month with a rare sit-down show from ECMA-winners Paper Lions, a reunion of Dennis Ellsworth and Haunted Hearts, a rock night from Charlottetown buzz-band The Meds, and a special new album launch from Catherine MacLellan.
A one-night only concert also takes place on Aug. 9, entitled “The First Waltz.” “The First Waltz” features an all-star cast of local musicians as a house band who will cover original music from an impressive roster of P.E.I. lead singers. Artists performing their own songs with the band include John MacPhee (Paper Lions), Fraser McCallum (Racoon Bandit), Nathan Gill (North Lakes), Dennis Ellsworth, and special guests.
“’The First Waltz’ is a production I have wanted to bring together for a few years,” says organizer and drummer Mike Carver. “It features some of my favourite musicians and songwriters together in an evening celebrating some great rock and pop music created on Prince Edward Island.”
The name, “The First Waltz,” is a tip of the cap to The Band's farewell concert “The Last Waltz” which saw the acclaimed roots-rock group joined on stage by more than a dozen of their friends and special guests. The house band includes Colin Buchanan (Paper Lions), Andrew Murray (English Words), Roger Carter (North Lakes/Racoon Bandit), Andy MacDonald (Two Hours Traffic), and Carver (North Lakes).
Recent ECMA nominees and Charlottetown pop-rockers, The Meds are on deck this weekend, Aug. 2, with opening act, rising folk-rock star, Dylan Menzie.
Dennis Ellsworth and Haunted Hearts play Aug. 16, Paper Lions play Aug. 23, and Catherine MacLellan’s new album launch is Aug. 30. All Spotlight PEI concerts begin at 8 p.m.
As a special promotion, concertgoers can purchase a ticket package for any three of the Spotlight PEI series for $60 plus tax, and even add an additional fourth show for just $20.
