VICTORIA – Musical Mondays at the Victoria Playhouse will feature Meaghan Blanchard and Katie McGarry on Monday, July 28, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Managing director of the Playhouse, Pat Smith, was booking singer-songwriters to perform in the 2014 series and saw a YouTube video of Blanchard and McGarry singing together.
“Their voices were beautifully complimentary, and it’s not often we have the opportunity to hear two talented artists sing together. It is definitely going to be a great night,” promised Smith.
A shy child growing up, Blanchard received valuable advice from her grandmother Glenda, a country singer who performed in the rural halls of P.E.I. Grammy Glenda’s words still ring in her ears to this day.
“Look for the person in the audience who is looking like they’re having a bad day and sing to them; make em’ smile. It’ll take your fear away, and you never know what that could mean to somebody.”
It was by sitting side stage at her grandmother’s performances that Blanchard also came to love the great female country singers who have influenced her music - Tammy Wynette, Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton.
Singer/songwriter McGarry likes to think of her latest album, “Waiting On”, as country/America with a dash of folk and pop to wash it down.
McGarry grew up in Belfast, and like many young Island performers, she began playing music and singing in church and at community benefits. At 18, she started writing and performing her original songs wherever there was an opportunity to perform. The positive response to those early performances created a confidence and belief in McGarry to continue making music.
