HUNTER RIVER - Terry Hatty and the Island Jazz Messengers will bring the sound of music to Harmony House Theatre on Friday, June 13, at 8 p.m.

Terry Hatty

From his early days growing up in Saint John, N.B., through university in Antigonish, N.S., making waves with his Jagger impressions, to decades of success with a variety of bands across Canada, including six years touring with the Guess Who, to the realm of musical theatre with his co-written musical "Canada Rocks!," Hatty is an Atlantic original.

For this performance, he will be performing funky R&B inspired covers of classic tunes like "Compared to What" by Les McCann, "People Get Ready" by Curtis Mayfield, and "Land of Hope and Dreams" by the boss, Bruce Springsteen, with a little McCartney too – "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "Fool on the Hill".

Also gracing the stage at Harmony House on Friday night will be the Island Jazz Messengers, P.E.I.'s fun and funky hard-bop sextet, featuring some of the Island's best improvisers, performing a mix of original charts along with some cool covers of pop and standards arranged for horns. The band is dedicated to continuing the tradition of East Coast hard-bop combos like those led by Art Blakey, Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, Lee Morgan and Horace Silver, and influential jazz arrangers such as Oliver Nelson famous for "Blues and the Abstract Truth".

The "funky" label refers to the rollicking, rhythmic feeling associated with hard bop, with roots in bebop and model music, but with all the influences of soul, R&B and jazz fusion.

This incarnation of the band will feature blistering solos and great grooves by sax man Dan Rowswell, trombonist Grahame Rhodes, Sean Ferris on piano and organ, bass player Deryl Gallant, and drummer Alan Dowling.

Tickets for the show are $15 and available by calling the venue at 964-2255 or online at www.harmonyhousetheatre.com.
