SUMMERSIDE – Continuing its 35- year tradition of quality choral singing, the Summerside Community Choir will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference with a spring/summer tour of the Island, performing in venues from West Prince to Souris.

Summerside Community Choir will be joining the Singing Strings for a concert at Trinity United Church in Summerside on Dec. 15. Members of the choir include, front, from left, Susan Bleakney, Hiltrud Hengst and Kim Knight-Picketts, and Ken Gay, back, rehearse for this weekend’s concert.

Their P.E.I. tour, “Together in Song,” is a musical presentation that is distinctly Canadian, including five specially commissioned pieces by Canadian composers.

Under the direction of Margot Rejskind, the choir will perform a variety of choral music. On the program are the well-known “Fogarty’s Cove” and “Away From the Roll of the Sea,” “Ave Stella Maris,” and two numbers to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. The new pieces are by composers David Buley, Tim Cooper and Stephen Hatfield plus there are tributes to Canada’s diverse cultural heritage.

On June 8, the SCC is in its home venue, Trinity United Church in Summerside, with a concert at 7 p.m.

Then on July 5 at 2:30 p.m., the choir will perform in historic St. Mary’s Church in Indian River, world-renowned for its acoustics, and a venue where the choir has enjoyed performing in the past.

The summer series of concerts winds up on July 18 when the choir takes part in the Summerside Arts and Culture Chautauqua Choral event in Summerside with a 7 p.m. concert.

The end of summer does not mean that the choral year is over for the choir, as plans are in the works for concerts in December that will feature Canadian Christmas music.
