‘From Shakespeare to Sondheim’ being staged at April 25 and 26 at The Mack

CHARLOTTETOWN – Spring is usually an emotionally-charged time for college students everywhere, as the year winds down and many look ahead to graduation and new adventures. That is certainly in evidence as the students of the Holland College School of Performing Arts (SoPA), a partnership with Confederation Centre of the Arts, prepare for “From Shakespeare to Sondheim” – a two-day showcase at The Mack this Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Members of the dance performance program at the Holland College School of Performing Arts, a partnership with Confederation Centre of the Arts, prepare for the end of year showcase, “From Shakespeare to Sondheim.” Members include (from left) Kassandra Brundle, Emma Turner, Connor Sharpe, Megan Connors, Cassie White, Mallory Wilkie, and Shauntelle Mombourquette. Missing is Lauren Thompson.

Featuring the first-ever graduating classes of the dance performance and theatre performance programs, as well as the 2014 Class of the Performing Arts Foundation program, this colourful variety show is the culmination of many months of training.

“I think all of us involved are keenly aware that this is a major step in the lives of these young performers,” says Peggy Reddin, director of arts education for Confederation Centre. “For all of the students, it is a marvelous opportunity to celebrate their achievements, but for the graduating class, there is a sense of the bittersweet. They have all grown so much over the course of the program, and it is hard to say good-bye.”

This jam-packed showcase features the contributions of 28 students across three different programs. As the title suggests, the styles represented cover a broad range. There is indeed work from both Shakespeare and composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim, and just about everything in between.

“There are large group numbers from the pop genre, heartbreakingly beautiful solos and duets, and great comedic sketches and songs,” continues Reddin, “and through it all, the students have found a truly authentic approach to the work.”

“From Shakespeare to Sondheim” is on deck for two nights only, April 25 and 26, at The Mack. Tickets are $15 per person, and can be purchased at the Confederation Centre box office, online at confederationcentre.com, or by telephone at 1-(902) 628-1864.
