CHARLOTTETOWN - P.E.I. short film, “Queen of the Crows”, has been selected to screen at Cannes 2014.

Queen of the Crows producer Jason Rogerson and director Harmony Wagner at the 2013 Atlantic Film Festival.

Written and directed by Island filmmaker, Harmony Wagner, and produced by Jason Rogerson of P.E.I.’s Periscope Pictures, the 11-minute film will play in the “CANADA: Not Short On Talent” program at the Short Film Corner during the Cannes Film Festival.

Winner of CBC’s 3-2-1 Award, “Queen of the Crows” tells the story of an 11-year-old girl who gets in trouble for acting like a crow, starring Charlottetown’s Kristen Thompson and Kelly Caseley.

“We are thrilled,” says Wagner. “So many great people worked on this and it is an honour for us all to be a part of such an important festival.”

Telefilm Canada selected a program of 30 Canadian shorts, including “Queen of the Crows”, to represent Canada at the Short Film Corner and screen at the Cannes Market Theatre.

“CANADA: Not Short on Talent” is an industry initiative designed to promote Canadian films and talent to international markets.

The showcase gives filmmakers a unique forum to connect with buyers, distributors and international festival programmers.

“This is an opportunity to showcase the beauty of Charlottetown and the capacity of our filmmaking community to the world,” says Rogerson.

“Cannes is the go-to festival for program directors of festivals and broadcasters from around the world looking for content. ”

Periscope Pictures employed a cast and crew of 19 talented Islanders in the making of the film.

The festival takes place in Cannes, France from May 14 to 25.

On Friday, April 18, the Guild in Charlottetown hosted Crows fly to Cannes, a fundraiser to help support Wagner and Rogerson. There was a screening of their film, followed by music.

Mitch Schurman, composer of the music for the film, took the stage, then rhythm and blues band, Got Blues, will perform followed by a funky nine-piece group with horns and back-up singers, Lady Soul. The Love Junkies, P.E.I.’s party band, closed out the night.
