CHARLOTTETOWN – The P.E.I. Museum and Heritage Foundation has commissioned a reprint of the most comprehensive property atlas ever published on Prince Edward Island and it goes on sale this Friday.

Boyde Beck (left) curator for the Museum and Heritage Foundation, Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Henderson and the foundation’s executive director, Dr. David Keenlyside, examine an original copy of “Meacham’s 1880 Atlas.”

“The original ‘Meacham’s 1880 Atlas’ mapped 50 Island communities and documented the layout of every farm in the province, so it’s safe to say there has never been a more comprehensive atlas produced for Prince Edward Island,” said Minister of Tourism and Culture Robert Henderson. “But it is so much more than an atlas. It also includes detailed illustrations of life on Prince Edward Island in a time of booming economic prosperity in the 1870s. The atlas will make a tremendous gift for anyone who enjoys learning about the history of the Island.”

The hardcover edition of “Meacham’s 1880 Atlas” has been reprinted on a number of occasions over the last 50 years.

The first reprint was in 1972. Additional reprints followed during the centennial celebrations of 1973, and in 1977, 1983 and 1990.

In 1995, a softcover version was published in an effort to reduce costs.

The new compact edition of the atlas will be smaller than the original hardcover edition in terms of the size of each page, but the quality of the images has not been compromised. One thousand books will be published.

“The museum is delighted to make this popular illustrated historic atlas available to the public once again and in an affordable format,” said Dr. David Keenlyside, executive director of the Museum and Heritage Foundation. “To learn about Island history, our geography and a snapshot view of Victorian life on Prince Edward Island, there is no better reference under one cover.”
