It’s that time of year again. The time when you start dreading the family road trip to celebrate the holiday season. Instead of holiday carols you are treated to a chorus of “Mom I’m bored” or “Dad I can’t get on the Internet!” The solution is easy, free audiobooks from the library.

The Summerside Rotary Library has a great selection of audiobooks for all ages in a variety of formats. Pick up the audiobook of “The Hobbit” by J.R.R. Tolkien, the “Percy Jackson” series by Rick Riordan, the “Harry Potter” series, or “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl, put it in your car’s CD player, and enjoy a story the whole family can love.

If you are travelling with children of various ages you might want to borrow a Playaway or download an eaudiobook. A Playaway is a preloaded audio player. It comes with the book already loaded; no need for downloading. All you need to add is batteries and headphones. Playaways can also be plugged into your car’s stereo using the same cords used by iPods or other MP3 devices. The Summerside Rotary Library has some great playaways that will appeal to teens including “Divergent” by Veronica Roth, “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green, or “The Hunger Games” series by Suzanne Collins.

Younger travellers might enjoy borrowing a Playaway View. The Playaway View is a handheld preloaded video device, similar to a portable DVD player. They come preloaded with stories and videos. Some popular Playaway Views available from the library include: “My Little Pony,” “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus,” and “Transformers.”

Anyone with an active library card can download an eaudiobook from Overdrive on the library’s website www.library.pe.ca. Our eaudiobooks work with most mobile devices, but check with library staff for details about downloading to your particular device.
