Sampson encourages dancers to audition for Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Nov. 5
CHARLOTTETOWN – Dynamic Charlottetown dancer Mark Sampson is creating a new work entitled "Banquet" for the P.E.I. 2014 celebrations. Sampson, a young man defined by his insatiable appetite for knowledge and new experiences, is a proud alumni of Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School professional division and currently trains at The Julliard School in New York, NY.
“Banquet” will further the goal of the P.E.I. 2014 Fund, which aims to support the growing excitement, pride and enthusiasm being felt in communities across Prince Edward Island for the upcoming 150th anniversary of the historic 1864 Charlottetown Conference.
At the age of only 19, Sampson is a remarkably well-seasoned choreographer. He has created several award-winning original pieces, including “Drinking by Candlelight” and “Now That We’ve Started” both of which were performed at the RWB’s Ballet “In the Park” in July of 2012 and 2013 respectively. "Now That We’ve Started” was also performed at the National Ballet School’s international festival of student choreography, Assemblé Internationale, in April of 2013.
Sampson attributes his success to his training received at the RWB School.
“The training I received at the RWB School gave me the skills that I needed to by successful at Juilliard and in the world of choreography. When I initially entered the RWB School, I didn’t know what the outcome would be and now I know that it was all leading here,” said Sampson.
“I definitely encourage anyone who is interested in a career to teach or dance professionally to attend the upcoming auditions in Charlottetown.”
The next opportunity for students from Charlottetown and surrounding areas to audition and take class with RWB School faculty takes place in Charlottetown on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at Confederation Centre of the Arts. The auditions take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the different age categories. There will also be a half-hour question and answer period at 10 a.m. with RWB faculty.
Those who audition have the opportunity to win a full tuition scholarship for the four-week summer session taking place in July 2014. Investors Group awards a $2,000 scholarship to an aspiring dancer in every province and territory across Canada. The summer session serves as the second phase of the audition process for the full-time program.
