CHARLOTTETOWN – In an effort to better meet client's needs, Family Service P.E.I. will be offering group therapy this fall in the Charlottetown area.
Unlike individual therapy sessions, group therapy offers participants the opportunity to interact with others with similar issues in a safe, supportive environment. Participants can try out new behaviours, role play, and engage with others in not only receiving valuable feedback and insight from other group members, but also in giving it.
Some research has indicated that a group therapeutic process tends to be even more beneficial to participants than one-to-one therapy due to the role of others in providing feedback and insight.
Many people who have never tried group therapy before are frightened by the idea, however most who engage in group therapy do become comfortable and familiar with the process over a short period of time.
"Our therapeutic counsellor Christina Campbell will be facilitating the groups," says Denise Lockhart, executive director of FSPEI. "Christina is extremely competent in this area and knows how to engage group participants to ensure they fully benefit from the therapeutic process."
Statistics from 2012 indicate that the number one presenting issue amongst Family Service P.E.I. clientele is stress.
"Stress transcends across the board, affecting people's marriages, finances, parenting abilities, workplace performance and social life. It is our job to help Islanders develop action plans that target the most stressful issues in their lives. Group therapy is another vehicle which permits us to do just this, but for a reduced fee, making it more affordable and accessible," says Lockhart.
Upcoming groups include:
– Becoming Calm and Focused: Approaches to understanding and coping with anxiety - starting Oct. 3, with four sessions total
– Workshop: Enhancing your Intimate Relationship - Nov. 2, one day only
– Becoming present and in touch with your world: Reducing stress through Mindfulness practice - Starting Nov. 7, with four sessions total.
Family Service P.E.I. is a not-for-profit community based organization providing credit and therapeutic counselling services to all Islanders regardless of their ability to pay. Individuals interested in the group therapy program may contact FSPEI at firstname.lastname@example.org or 892-2441.
