A teddy bear clinic is part of the activities and fun planned for the AVC Open House Saturday in Charlottetown.
“Open House is one of the highlights of the year at AVC – and, now in its 25th year, a tradition for many people,” says Dr. Don Reynolds, dean. “It is wonderful to see hundreds of people of all ages, from babies in arms to seniors, coming through the doors to learn about our college and what we do here.”
Organized and run by AVC students, Open House is an opportunity for the public to go behind the scenes at a veterinary medical college. Visitors will see many demonstrations and exhibits, including a parade of dog breeds, clicker training with dogs, a stick-horse rodeo for children ages three and older, a mini-zoo, a painted cow and horse, and much more.
The stick-horse rodeo will take place from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Red Rock Agility will give two 30-minute dog agility demonstrations, one at 11 a.m. and the other at 12:30 p.m. These events take place outdoors near the Robertson Library.
Dog trainer Tonja Stewart will give a presentation about prevention of dog bites in AVC Lecture Theatre A from 11:30 a.m. to noon. And the always-popular parade of dog breeds will run from 12 noon to 12:30 p.m. outside the Large Animal Hospital or in the Large Animal Arena if it is raining.
A “pooper-scooper” challenge, where participants have to “scoop” up a water-filled balloon and run to deposit it in a garbage can, will take place from 1 to 1:30 p.m., also outside near the Robertson Library.
Children can bring their favourite stuffed toys for a check-up and treatment at the Teddy Bear Clinic. And they can have their faces painted, get balloon animals, and learn how to gown up for surgery. There will also be displays by community organizations, the UPEI applied human sciences department and the Let's Talk Science – UPEI science outreach program.
Visitors are welcome to bring canned cat or dog food or toys for the P.E.I. Humane Society.
AVC Open House is one of the largest, most successful open houses in Atlantic Canada. Everyone is welcome to attend.
