Adventures in reading
By Rebecca Boulter
It was a busy summer at the Summerside Rotary Library with 19,917 people visiting the library and 26,256 items borrowed. Library staff sends a big thank you to our summer student and high school volunteers who helped with the Summer Reading Club, book sales, and technology assistance.
September in the library means getting back to regular library programs. The Fall 2013 Library Program Guide is now available in libraries and online. This guide includes information about free programs for all ages planned at 26 libraries across P.E.I. including the English and French libraries in Summerside. If you want to know what is going on in libraries this fall be sure to pick up a copy.
In addition to recurring programs such as Babylapsit, Preschool Story Time, and Book Clubs, several special programs are planned for the Summerside Rotary Library this September. On Saturday, Sept. 14, the library will be presenting a free puppet show for all ages. The show starts at 11 a.m. and features “Space Creatures Meet Mother Goose” and “There Is a Monster Under My Bed.” Stay around after the show to play with the puppets.
On Saturday, Sept. 21, the Western Authors Guild will meet at the library from 1 to 4 p.m. The group will be joined by P.E.I.’s Poet Laureate Dianne Hicks Morrow. Everyone is welcome to hear the Poet Laureate speak, and new authors are welcome to join the group and share your work.
The ‘Angel Lady’ Karen Forrest will be offering a free lecture entitled “Angelic Help: Can Angels Help You in Your Everyday Life?” on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. Learn how angels can help you and ask your angel related questions.
The P.E.I. Public Library Service recently announced that “Island: the Collected Stories” by Alistair MacLeodis the 2013 One Book One Island selection. The book is available in French and English, in print, ebook, and audiobook format. You can call, visit the library, or go online to request a copy. Alistair MacLeod will be speaking at the Summerside Rotary Library on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. We expect a big crowd so we will be opening the library just for his event that evening. Don’t miss out on your chance to meet a Canadian literary legend!.
