This trumpet recital features Maddix, along with pianist Lynn Johnson, exploring the contrasting styles of classical and jazz. Selections range from “Concerto in A flat Major” by Alexander Artunian to Gershwin's “Summertime.” Guitarist Peter Gallant appears as a special guest in Maddix's arrangement of “Amazing Grace.”
Maddix is currently in his fourth year of the Bachelor of Music program at Mount Allison University. He is principal trumpet of the Mt A Symphonic Band and Brass Choir as well as lead trumpet of the Mt A Jazz Ensemble. He is also principal trumpet and trumpet coach of the award winning New Brunswick Youth Orchestra.
He has performed at the Festivals of Music in New York City, the Rhythms International Music Festival in Ottawa, the National Music Festival, and the Indian River Music Festival in Prince Edward Island. In 2011 Maddix placed third in the brass category at the National Music Festival, as well as winning a special brass award for his performance. He appeared as guest soloist with the P.E.I. Symphony Orchestra for their 2011/2012 season, performing the Neruda Trumpet Concerto.
Johnson earned a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from North Texas State University and a Master of Music in Collaborative Piano at the University of Southern California. For many years now she has been associated with Mount Allison University as professor of piano and as a collaborative pianist.
Her career as a performer has taken her throughout Canada, the United States and Europe as well as on-air broadcasts with CBC and Radio Canada.
