SUMMERSIDE - Elm Street Elementary students were "feeling the joy" during Easter Seals Ambassador Colton Matheson's visit yesterday morning.
Twelve-year-old Colton of Montague had students smiling and laughing during his entertaining performance on Day 1 of his six-day Island school tour.
Colton's motto throughout P.E.I.'s 54th Easter Seals Campaign is "feel the joy". He told Elm Street students that even though people may look or move different, everyone can feel joy.
The student body erupted in laughter when Colton asked, "Are there any cheques here?"
The P.E.I. Easter Seals Society raises money to support programs that help children, youth and adults with disabilities.
Principal Tracy Beaulieu, along with Grade 1 student Kylee Hill who raised the most money at Elm Street, presented Colton with $500 to put towards the Easter Seals campaign.
Beaulieu told Colton the school held a dance-a-thon to raise money.
"Did you play Michael Jackson?" Colton asked.
He told students about his love for music and performing.
Colton's stepmother Debra Matheson helped him read a speech he prepared that told students about his life with Down syndrome, his favorite pastimes and why he is excited to be the 2010 Easter Seals Ambassador.
Colton's father Jamie and his step-grandparents are also joining him on his weeklong tour of Island schools.
Before leaving to visit the next school, Colton broke out his guitar to perform Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog" for cheering students.
Colton will be visiting 65 Island schools between Thursday, April 14 and Wednesday, April 21.
