SUMMERSIDE - Elementary students chanted "Vive la franÇais" as they marched through the corridors of Elm Street School this week.
The cause for celebration was the official announcement of Elm Street becoming a French Ambassador School.
"We are very excited to receive this recognition," said principal Tracy Beaulieu.
"École Ambassadrice du FranÇais" is a program created by Canadian Parents for French to encourage schools to support the learning of the French language.
CPF representative Claude Parent presented Elm Street School with a banner of recognition to mount in their school. The school will also receive a free one-year CPF association membership.
Chair of the Western School Board Gary Doucette thanked Elm Street for their dedication to the French language.
"Elm Street has a proud history of supporting the French school program and this is a continuation of that," said Doucette.
During Tuesday's presentation French Immersion teacher Giselle Babineau-Jordan listed aloud all students that had Acadian last names. Students were asked to stand if they heard their last name. Students soon realized that everyone in the gymnasium was Acadian, came from an Acadian background or has a friend who is Acadian.
The presentation was part of P.E.I.'s French Awareness week. Throughout the week both English and French students at Elm Street will learn about French manners, French salutations, and more.
Since the program began in 2006, 16 schools in the Western School Board have registered as French Ambassador Schools. Elm Street is the first school to join the program in the 2009-2010 school year.
Suggested activities for French Ambassador schools include singing the national anthem in French, displaying French work throughout the school and encouraging French presentations and guests.
Other Elementary schools registered as French Ambassadors include Tignish, Alberton and O'Leary.
