SUMMERSIDE - An Island teen who stole a 1995 Plymouth Acclaim and fled from police has received a short time in youth custody.
The 17-year-old appeared in Summerside Youth Justice Court recently.
He'd previously pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, flight and stealing the car and cash. He further admitted breaking a curfew while awaiting sentencing.
The 17-year-old and a 15-year-old accomplice stole the car from Charlottetown. They later rifled through vehicles in the Slemon Park area and took $15 to $25.
The 17-year-old was the driver. He failed to stop for police in Miscouche and then in Summerside. He went through stop signs, reached speeds over 100 km/h in the city and passed on solid lines.
The pair ditched the car on MacEwen Road the morning of Dec. 30 and were soon caught in woods with the help of a police dog.
The court heard the 17-year-old was bright and generally a good worker but had addiction issues.
The other teen involved had been sentenced to a 135-day custody and supervision order, but he had a record.
Judge Jeff Lantz sentenced the 17-year-old to a nine-day custody and supervision order, including six days in custody. It's open - or less restrictive - custody.
"He needs that short taste of what might lie in store for him," Lantz said.
Lantz allowed him to serve weekends so he can work.
The judge also put the teen on probation for a year, with terms including orders not to operate a motor vehicle.
